The OFMC takes a break. (We do a lot of this.)
You may have noticed that it has been hot lately across most of the country. Well, the OFMC had the perfect answer to that: Jump out of the frying pan into the inferno. Head for Nevada. Now there's a cool climate in July!
So we did. Took off Friday on the bikes from Denver headed west across Colorado. We knew it was really hot when we stopped at a rest area in Rulison, just west of Rifle, and the temperature clock read 103 degrees. Yow! No wonder we were melting. We all have those absorbent-bead neck things that you soak in water and then drape around your neck, for cooling. Well, in this kind of heat those things work for about the first 10 seconds after you drape them around your neck and then it's like they're not there.
Dennis has gone to an extreme. He has a whole vest made of the material and he gets very cool when he puts that on. But after riding in the heat for 15 minutes it pretty well dries out and then he's wearing an extra vest, i.e., another layer. Oh well, suck it up, drink a lot of fluids, and pray for clouds.
We stopped the first night in Grand Junction and then rode across Utah, up to Tooele, west of Salt Lake City. Yeah, that was another hot ride. But look what we had on tap the next morning: Bonneville Salt Flats. OK, at that point all you want to do is ride and go as fast as you can so can get somewhere cooler. Cooler, such as Wendover, NV, or on across to Wells and then north to Jackpot.
So three very hot days, but we had a plan. No riding today. We played golf. Yeah, that's right, golf in the desert on a hot day. Well, you know, it wasn't at all bad. And we had a great time. Even took some really great swings. Of course we started early in the morning; nobody wants to be out on the course at 3 p.m.
So the OFMC is off on our summer trip. And we really are headed for cooler climes. Tomorrow we go up into Idaho and hey, the forecast for tomorrow is only for 91. Good thing John sent us a special email reminding us to bring our long johns.
What the heck, none of this matters. We're on our motorcycles and on vacation. As far as I'm concerned, that's all that counts.
