Motorcycle touring with the guys: Introducing old sights to new eyes

Snake River Canyon at Twin Falls
A panoramic shot of the Snake River Canyon at Twin Falls, ID

One of the pleasures of taking a motorcycle trip with your friends is the opportunity to go places you've been before but they have not. We did that today, showing some of the newer OFMC members the eye-popping Snake River Canyon, up on the north edge of Twin Falls, ID.

If you've never been there, this is not your typical river canyon. It is wide and the sides of the canyon are sheer, but down in the bottom there is a lot of land. There's even a golf course! The first time we came along here we had spent the night in Jackpot, NV, about 45 miles south, and were headed somewhere quite a ways distant. We got to the bridge, stopped and looked over, and our jaws dropped. Kind of like what happened to some of these guys today.

So what we did way back then was, we drove down into the canyon--a treat in itself!--and checked to see if we could get a tee time. We could, so we ran back up to town, got a motel, and went and played golf.

Then, some years later, we brought another group of OFMCers out here and planned to play golf but when we rode down asking for a tee time they laughed at us. You don't have reservations? Get serious. So we cruised on down to Jackpot and played golf there. They actually have a very nice course there, a bit of desert turned green through the magic of huge quantities of water. And Jackpot has become a favorite, but it's still fun to look down into this amazing canyon. Maybe some day we'll play that course again.

Anyway, check out the brief slide show. It will give you a little bit of an idea what this place is like. And if you're ever on your bike cruising through Idaho, this is definitely a place to stop.

I think Sharon has a good guess but my guess would have been Old Farts.

Okay - Ken, who is right?

It's like NCR or IBM--used to be initials, now it's the name. Never was anything but a joke, since we were in our 30s at the time the name was adopted. Patty gets the prize.
