The start of a race
The first ever motorcycle racing day at High Plains Raceway was favored with great weather and a large turn-out of racers today, Saturday, May 9, 2009. Among them were top pro racers such as Matt Lynn and Jason DiSalvo, both of whom picked up wins. Matt was the first-ever motorcycle winner at the new track.
The new track was described by racers as very challenging, with turns and elevation changes that make it fun and exciting to ride.
"Everybody loves it," said Jennifer Grosse, Motorcycle Roadracing Association (MRA) secretary.
"This racetrack is definitely Super Bike quality," added racer Sev Bonnie.
By mid-afternoon the track record lap time was down to 1:44.354, set by Matt Lynn, although that record was not expected to last beyond tomorrow, when the second day of racing will be run.
Estimating the racer turn-out at 150 at a minimum, MRA member Tamara Schellinger, with Vanmar Racing, explained that "This track here is very important" because several other tracks in the state have closed in recent years.
Beyond the pro racers, the men and women on the tracks range "from A to Z, doctors, lawyers, construction workers, office workers . . ." Tamara noted.
Racing starts tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. There is a $10 gate fee for spectators. The track is located on U.S. 36 east of Byers.
