On November 24 at 9:00 a.m. a rally will be held on Parliament Hill to call for an end to child poverty in Canada.
Twenty years ago the Canadian government voted unanimously on a resolution to end child poverty by the year 2000. But in 2009, one in ten children in Canada still live in poverty - a rate that is almost the same as when the resolution was passed in 1989.
Children living in low-income situations are more likely to have poor health and low school achievement, fewer opportunities to participate in play and recreation, sub-standard or even unsafe housing, and higher injury rates than kids in families with higher incomes. Down the road they are more likely to have higher rates of teen pregnancy, gang-violence, school drop-outs and poor physical and mental health.
Those interested in joining the rally are invited to meet at the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill. Following the rally Campaign 2000 and its partners will release their 2009 Report Card on Child and Family Poverty.
Campaign 2000 is Canada-wide network of over 120 organizations working to end child and family poverty in Canada.

Not to worry. This all appears to be part of Harpers Economic Action Plan. The Conservatives are trying to boost consumer confidence by bankrupting the entire country. I have some doubts as to the success of his Action Plan but he must know what he's doing because look at the effect it's having on the nation. Consumer bankrupcies up 43% in Canada and 70% in Alberta. Keep up the good work Harpo. The Harpo legacy will be Jobless Canadians, long lineups at foodbanks, massive consumer bankrupcy and a half trillion dollar deficit.
