Kellogg pulls peanut butter crackers off shelves due to possible salmonella contamination

The salmonella saga continues, and it has gone beyond the original product advisory against King Nut brand peanut butter. This time, Kellogg has asked stores to stop selling its highly popular Keebler and Austin brand peanut butter crackers.
Peanut Corp. of America, based in Lynchburg, Va. recalled 21 lots of peanut butter that have been produced since July 1 for possible salmonella contamination. As a primary supplier of peanut paste to Kellogg, it requested that both Keebler and Austin brand peanut butter products be removed from sale.
According to the Washington Post, Kellogg hasn’t yet received any complaints or discovered problems with the crackers, but has taken the action as a precautionary measure.
The recalled crackers are:

·         Toasted Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers
·         Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Crackers
·         Cheese and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers
·         Peanut Butter-Chocolate Sandwich Crackers
On Kellogg’s Web site, president and CEO of the company states,
"Consumer health and safety is our top priority. We are taking these voluntary actions out of an abundance of caution."

Although no known cases of illness have been reported from consumption of the crackers, it is advised that these products not be eaten or purchased until further information is available.
