Citizen journalists: Bloggers observe, report, and comment in Montgomery County

Bloggers cover local politics, events, and entertainment

Montgomery County's government has a robust presence online, as I wrote in this post.  Far more interesting is the intelligent, opinionated, and often very funny network of independent bloggers who cover county politics, personalities, events, and controversies.  As there are far too many to cover in one post, I'll devote Mondays hereafter to a Montgomery County Blog Roundup, starting today with political/news blogs written by local bloggers.

At Just Up the Pike (the "Pike" referenced is Columbia, not Rockville), recent Maryland graduate Dan Reed covers East County/District 4 politics and happenings in meticulous detail.  His knowledge of planning and development in the eastern part of the county is encyclopedic, and he has posted revealing interviews with local politicians, including recently-elected County Councilwoman Nancy Navarro.  Just Up the Pike is updated on a near-daily basis.

Rockville Central offers news and opinion focused on Rockville.  The blog welcomes contributions from readers and local figures, especially those who wish to express disagreement with the blog's editors.  Rockville City Council members John Britton and Anne Robbins have written recent guest posts expressing their opposing opinions on pay raises for Rockville city employees.  Rockville Central is often updated more than once daily, including a Picture of the Day (readers are also invited to submit pictures for POTD consideration).

Gaithersblog offers Gaithersburg residents a central location for city council minutes, police reports, and events.  While posts are often reprints of information offered on other sites (always properly credited), the blog is a useful resource for Gaithersburg readers, who can find vital information collected on one frequently-updated site.

Maryland Politics Watch covers Maryland politics with a focus on Montgomery County.  David Lublin and Adam Pagnucco update more than once daily, and their sharp, detailed commentary often sparks heated (but generally civil) debate in the comments.

Visit JUTP, Rockville Central, Gaithersblog, and MPW for independent, local, knowledgeable coverage of news and politics.  Next week: Local review blogs.

You missed a blog. That's "MoCo Mojo" and you can find a link to it from "Just Up the Pike" to campaign dot thomashardman dot com-- mostly covering Aspen Hill but there's a fair amount of rumination from the National level down to the purely personal. Special focus on crime and gangs, and on the County's approach to the mental health care crisis, homelessness, and foreclosures.

    Hi Thomas~
Thanks, I'll add it to another roundup soon. I was thinking of doing a post on bloggers who cover everything. Next week, I'm going to do local review blogs...let me know if there's one that I shouldn't miss.
