Tuition-Free Montessori seeks charter from the Chicago Public Schools

A proposed tuition-free Montessori K-8 charter school in Chicago is hopeful to open for the 2010 school year.

The Core Design Team Members for Avondale Montessori Academy are seeking operating authority from the Chicago Public Schools to open a K-8 Montessori charter school in a high-need community in Chicago.  If successful, the school will open in the Fall of 2010 at an initial capacity of 200 students the first year with a maximum of 600 students by the fifth year of operation.

Admission Process
Student admissions will be based on an open-lottery application process and the exact school location has not yet been announced but is expected to be on the north side in the Old Irving Park area. The proposed school's educational philosophy encourages a child's interaction and hands-on experiences with the natural world all while embracing the urban environment as an extension of the classroom.

Charter Approval Process
The extensive charter school approval process will last until October 2009 after which time a decision by the Chicago Public Schools if it will grant a charter to the Avondale Montessori Academy will be announced in mid-November.
