Dogs, cats and pet lovers across the country can expect some paw-themed presents under their trees this year. Although 93 percent of Americans say they’ll spend less or about the same as last year during this holiday season, an Associated Press-PetSide.com poll revealeed that pet owners are planning to buy their dogs and cats holiday gifts.
According to Sharon Haber, a pet products sales representative, pet owners will be purchasing reasonable priced necessities but also items that are trend specific. “Look for more eco-friendly items under the tree this year.”
At Simply Fido, manufacturer of organic pet toys, Company publicist Sadie Babbage explains that the organic movement continues to grow as people want to have healthier lifestyles. “As a result, pet owners want to share their lifestyles with their pets.” Babbage notes that sales of organic toys are very strong this year, especially at Christmas when pet owners want to treat their dogs with something special. The company’s most popular toy is Petite Monkey, reasonable priced at $12.99.
Pat Jackson will be purchasing a bed for her King Charles Spaniel, Hootie, this holiday season. Jackson notes that she doesn’t have tendency to splurge over the holidays like others but does like to purchase a gift for her dog.
“Hootie is 8 years old and we like to keep our senior dog as comfortable as possible. Our vet recommended purchasing a bed to help increase his mobility.”
Consumer experts note that Jackson is not alone. They are seeing consumers giving for a purpose instead of gifting non-essential items. In these economic times, people are conscious of how they are spending their money and what they are spending money on.
Cats are also receive giving that are resonable priced but eco-friendly. One stand-out item in the Cat Fancy magazine’s Holiday Gift Guide was Caboodle. Billed as the green alternative to cat condos, a Caboodle (made from recycled, and corrugated cardboard boxes), are stacked to provide entertaining habits for cats.
At a purchase price of $29.95, cat lovers can purchase a gift for their cat without breaking the bank. Moreover, one of the most interesting factors about the Caboodle is that you can leave it au naturale or decorate at home as an arts and craft project. This could be a great post-holiday project if you have kids.
Other than purchasing gifts for pets, dog lovers are gifted with canine themed items too.
Jane St. Lifer Kennedy, an art appraiser, is know for purchasing tasteful breed-themed socks, ties and picture frames for her dog-loving friends. This year, a friend gave her the idea of giving a dog-owning host or hostess of a holiday party, a canine-themed ornament made of glass or resin, instead of the traditional gift of a bottle wine or Poinsettia plant.
“At my first party this year, the hostess opened the gift and walked right over to the tree to hang it. She even went to show her dog my gift.”
Kennedy orders ornaments from Bronners in Frankenmuth, Michigan.

There are lots of neat gadgets out there for your pet but lately I've discovered some interesting projects in handyman magazines that were a lot of fun. But the most fun was watching the reaction of my dogs. Of course those reactions ranged from utter confusion and rejection to glee. What can I say.
