As many of us make plans this upcoming holiday weekend we should all bear in mind that above celebration and merriment, 4th of july safety should be a primary concern. Curbing the consumption of adult beverages will exponentially increase 4th of July safety not only regarding operating motor vehicle and proper handling of fireworks but it will improve your overall health.
• Alcohol interferes with your body’s ability to absorb vitamins and minerals. So it “undoes” all the effort on your part to get fit and healthy. It also interferes with/enhances the effects or is contra-indicated for use with many OTC as well a prescription medications. Read product labels carefully.
• Alcohol has zero nutritional value and is high in calories, especially when combined with juices and creams or sugary mixers. Again, this undoes all the time you spend in the gym and all of the more healthful choices you make when you eat better and take supplements.
• Consumption of alcohol can lead to dehydration because it is a diuretic. If you are out in the sun and are consuming beer, wine, liquor and other beverages mixed with alcohol you may feel like you are quenching your thirst but you are really driving the fluid from your body and filling your stomach with thousands of unnecessary calories. These calories add up over time and put you at risk to develop and/or exacerbate a number of physical ailments including but not limited to: high blood pressure, adult onset diabetes, coronary artery disease, cancer, increased depression.
• Consumption of alcohol obviously leads to impaired judgment. Many lives have been negatively impacted by irresponsible drinking. Most people don’t set out to get lit and put themselves or the ones they love in harm’s way but it happens every year nonetheless. 4th of July Safety should be of paramount concern.
There are many places to go in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex to celebrate the occasion of our country’s birth, whether it is to view fireworks, participate/watch parades or to socialize with family and friends. Regardless of your destination or choice of merry-making activities, please remember that limiting your consumption of adult beverages will help keep you and your family safe as well as contribute to your goals of fitness and better health.
