A recent ad for Evony.
You've probably seen the ads for Evony. They've been evolving, from showing busty women to... just showing busts.
Too many, apparently. The player base of Evony is starting to grow, along with some unusual problems.
Bruce Everiss of BruceOnGames has posted an article exposing Evony and its maker for what it really is - a scam, a virus, a thief, and a generally all around bad thing.You should read the article, but I'll do my best to recap the main points here.
First of all, the maker of Evony Online, Eric Lam, is a Chinese businessman who is associated with a gold farming business. He's been sued by Microsoft in the past. He earns an insane amount of money from just this. Now he's created this Evony MMO, where you have to pay to get practically everything. And this is just the beginning of the shadiness.
Items you get in game, even ones you get with real money, tend to disappear with no option of a refund. The game itself blatantly steals graphics from Age of Empires, and play style from Civilization. The ads are taken from various lingerie magazines. iEvony, a program you can download to your computer (as opposed to the browser based game) is thought to be a trojan used to extract email addresses, which they then will proceed to spam from countless email addresses.
The game seemed fishy from the beginning.. this is not much of a surprise. In case you needed a more clear reason to stay away from Evony... here it is.

Evony is a fun game, especially for free. Some of you people are sooo uptight...

4. Intimidation;
5. Stalking;
preteen or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen or teen using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones. It has to have a minor on both sides, or at least have been instigated by a minor against another minor. Once adults become involved, it is plain and simple cyber-harassment or cyberstalking. Adult cyber-harassment or cyberstalking is NEVER called cyberbullying.
do what i do, dont buy anything, sure the game takes longer but when u aint got nothing 2 do who cares
anyone who has been/is being duped during the merger between w1-w5 will not only agree with the above but will think its too soft.
items disappearing with no explanation, whole accounts lost, promises of not losing anything broken, no contact from the devs during all of this, sudden server downs for 'maintenance' no information about the problems and a sudden disappearance of most of the moderators except for those trawling the forums to remove any too critical comments.
the worst part is coin players have suffered the most, even coins have been taken, instead of admiting the concept didnt work and rebooting to pre merge status in a full rollback (we think they didnt bother to make back ups before the merger) they insist on merging again and giving players even more problems and stress to the point that Evony for former W1-W5 players is now very stressful.
as a newbie to wargaming my experience in Evony has put me off completely and i know of many others who have left over this prob
It's a fairly fun game where there doesnt seem to be a reason to spend money on coins unless you play the game 24/7. It can be played well without ever having to spend real world money, almost every browser game offers you speed ups and extras if you pay cash so apart from the borderline porn advertising i dont see what the fuss is all about (i only play the browser based game, not ievony). In fact the compensation in coin for the recent server outages have made it so i wouldnt need evony coin even if i wanted to buy it. I can see the graphics and game play elements of both civ and aoe but both of these have been ripped of by pretty much every turn based rts game and standard rts game since 2001 (most of which are purchase games, not free ones) so im suprised to see it raised as an issue. Fianlly, gold farming, the problem here is not that people do it to make cash but the fact that people will actual buy it, they are the problem, stop buying it and vendors will vanish soon after.
I have not seen any of the mentioned above problems. The game is fun. I have been playing it for awhile now and have never had a glitch.

Hi Yes this game but a virus on my computer from ievony.Trogan.exe or something i hate it , it may seem fun at first but ur computer will hate it !!!
Evony is a scam, they merged world 1-5 which was a complete mess, then world 6-11, now world 12-17. Still they have not been able to resolve countless of sexual harassment claims. Everything about the game is saying illegal don't play me.
According to Evony, people aren`t quitting the game because of the server mergers, disappearing coins, complete absence of customer service, in game sexual harrasment,epidemic of rule violations that are not enforced. According to Evony,people are quitting the game because of a bad review on a blog site,LMAO.
Evony can`t seem to admit to themselves that people arent blind, people see Evony for what it is and want no part of it.
Evony is really similar to Tribal Wars. If you like this kind of waiting game, just play TW instead. Its much more legit.
Also, in TW, you can't pay your way through the game.
Funny, theres an Evony advertisement on the right as I read this article.

I have been playing for awhile now and never downloaded anything my computer is fine and i have never spent a dime and harassment you come across everywhere its all how you look at it i guess if your dumb enough to pay real money that's your problem

Evony is a lier. In court papers from a pending lawsuit Evony claims that have never been affiliated with a company called UMGE and have never had any affiliations to China. The following quote was taken from an Evony online help wanted ad dated May 31 2009:
"UMGE (United Multiplayer Gaming Entertainment) the makers of the new free web browser game Evony are calling for workers of all kinds as they push their HR (Human Resources) drive into full motion, as the uptake on Evony continues to push the boundaries.
UMGE out of China has put big dollars behind Evony..."

Game sites and Porn sites are the #1 sources of computer viruses. The mere fact you're connected there puts your computer at risk. (Like the "risk" of death by falling from the 20th floor---it's a near-certainty.)
i was on youtube and an evony link was in the corner of the page and my dad freaked out on me cuz he thought i was watching porn or sumthin even though i showed him it was just a link and i was watching a music video evony got me grounded for 3 weeks......thanks evony
I wonder like in Like Dark Orbit, the people playing for free cannot build up fast enough to keep from being overwhelmed by the people who pay real money. The "free players" just end up being cannon fodder for the people who do pay to play...

well i hate to break it to you but i have not put 1 dime into this game and i have gotten to the 5 highest rank in there and i can currently hold 5 citys
i have gotten everything from the amulet i got for free everyday
and i have not experienced my items i have won disappearing
dont say you cant get anywhere i know people who are bigger than me and they have not put a dime into this game
it truely is free forever but you can pay to play optionally cause thats how they support their servers and employees

yet another evony defender. I have read numerous articles and seen a few videos of alleged "proof" that this is all bad stuff. and virus's and u can't play without paying. BS. 1) I haven't paid anything and very high up in the game. granted it takes along time to do some stuff (205hrs to research archery lvl 10) so it makes it tempting to pay for speedups. sorry I'm not that lame I'll set it an forget it until it's done. 2) my anti virus and anti spyware run scans everyday. nothing suspicious has ever been found. 3) I don't see how you relate evony to gold farming for WoW. maybe it's a cover website but I don't care I don't play WoW so have at it. 4) stop complaining because another guy got rich before you did. or some guys game made it big and yours didn't. I have played tons of games that are similar to alot of other games. big deal doesn't mean anything. 5) last but not least, IT'S JUST A GAME. Get over it. get over yourself. and get a better antivirus if you're that scared. :-)

LOl well if you ever do and want to put money into the game dont! I was tempted to pay and I did bought 30 Dollars worth of Cents and everything was going well till my bank statement came in. Apparently I had an associate with Evony a whole different company working with evony Was taking money out of my accout without me knowing anything. They took a total of 250 dollars from me. I was P.Oed. I called the bank and they told me how evony and this other company were a partnership and they are now going into an investigation so I can get my money back. Other than that while I was not spending money on the game I did progress pretty well and it is definently possible to become a great competitor in the game without spending money. I would deffinently advise to not spend money on this game and play it as is. Great game but dont be tempted.

played evony for one year never used a computer befor evony now there saying im using bots and cheats i dont even know what a bots is it is a scam 100% and now they have band me for being a loyel player of there game work that out never spend money there if you do your mad.

I've played on this game for over a year. Never spent a dime on it and all the free stuff I got never disappeared. I hold a few cities right now, no Historic cities or heros, but i've never gotten a virus from it or anything. Works just fine for me.
