Browncoats all over the globe cried out in dismay when Joss Whedon's Firefly series was cancelled by Fox after just 11 episodes in 2003. They (and by they, I mean we) had barely begun to use the moniker Browncoats when the trip had come to an end. That's why the follow-up movie "Serenity" was met with wild adulation and commercial success and continuned cries for more from the fan base.
The Firefly franchise is currently owned by a legal pretzel of 20th Century Fox and Whedon's Mutant Enemy production company. When a Firefly-based MMO was announced in 2006, it was licensed from Fox, not Mutant Enemy. Couple that with the lack of recent updates and Fox's "we'll get around to it" responses on the status, and it is understandable why there is lot of worry about the quality and future of the product.
The company tasked with building the world of Firefly and Serenity is The Multiverse Network, but this company seems to have bitten off more than it can chew from the Murdoch muffin. Multiverse hasn't given an update on the status of the game in months (read: years) and the usual suspects are starting to cry vaporware. The offical Multiverse website doesn't even list a Firefly MMO in the works and the latest word from Fox is that they'd rather see a Buffy the Vampire Hunter MMO instead.
Browncoats are notorious for organizing support, but it is unlikely that a cruise with Shepherd Book will sway the fat-trimmers at Fox or Multiverse. Regardless, this Browncoat will continue to hope for the best.
