This may not be the official main event, but it’s the fight that most casual fans will tune in to watch. The action will be fast and furious, but probably won’t last very long. Nonetheless, it should serve to leave everyone’s heart beating a little faster.
So who will emerge victorious? Here's my opinion:
Houston Alexander (9-4, 2-3 UFC) vs. Kimbo Slice (3-1, 0-0 UFC)
Houston Alexander fights in the light heavyweight division (205 pounds) while Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson competes in the heavyweight division. However, this match will be contested at a catch-weight of 215 pounds.
While both men bring heavy hands into the cage, most believe that Alexander will have a noticeable
advantage in hand speed. I’m not so sure I believe that’s true. Kimbo’s hands are amazingly quick for a heavyweight and he also adds footwork and head movement to his list of advantages in this matchup.
Both men have shown they can be knocked out and it’s almost certain one of them will fall victim to their opponent’s strikes in this bout. So who will be the first to land the fight-changing punch (or kick)?
Alexander’s supporters believe his quickness will allow him to strike first and send Kimbo reeling. Kimbo’s fans are confident their guy has better head movement and will avoid getting hit first. Besides, wouldn’t it be tough to aim for a chin you can’t see?
My vote goes with the Kimbo fans. I’ve never been a supporter of Kimbo and I’m really not starting now. However, I do believe the UFC has done well matching him up with an opponent that will come straight at him enabling Kimbo to use his superior standup technique to score a knockout or TKO.
There is a chance we’ll see Kimbo go for a takedown to take Alexander completely out of his element. He’s been training with American Top Team and has reportedly been picking up some ground skills. Will it happen?
It’s doubtful, but possible.
Another possibility to consider is that the fight goes past the first round. Alexander hasn’t seen the second round in nearly five years. Kimbo went to the third round against James Thompson before winning by TKO, and into the second round against Roy Nelson during The Ultimate Fighter.
Who has the advantage in conditioning? I believe Kimbo can lay claim to that.
Will it matter? I doubt it. Kimbo wins this in less than three minutes.
