UFC 106 poster
The Mandalay Bay Event Center hosted the weigh-ins for UFC 106, earlier tonight. What was expected to be the biggest story the scale could tell turned out to be a neat little caption reading “Anthony Johnson makes weight.”
Welterweight contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, who missed the welterweight limit by six pounds just one month ago, tonight briskly trotted onto the scales and weighed in at 170 pounds on the button. While Johnson still has an enormous frame for a welterweight, towering over his opponent Josh Koscheck during the stare down, Rumble easily dismissed concerns that making weight could be a reoccurring problem in his career.
In fact, all fighters made weight for UFC 106 with virtually no trouble. No fighter looked exhausted or extensively dehydrated and good weight-management seems to be one thing this card has going for it.
The only oddity to be seen tonight, besides Marcus Davis coming dressed like a professional wrestler followed by Phil Baroni totally upstaging him in that regard, was the shadow of a black eye being sported by headlining light heavyweight Tito Ortiz.
While it’s odd for a fighter to be sparring hard enough to scuff up his face so close to a major fight, Tito’s eye did not appear overly swollen and should not be a factor in his main event bout against former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin.
