The American Sambo Association working in conjunction with the Rosati School of Martial Arts will be holding a Sambo seminar November 15th. Rosati will host the seminar at their Ronkonkoma, New York location.

Sambo is a martial art originating in Russia that is perhaps most famous for being the sport of origin for consensus number one heavyweight in MMA, Fedor Emelianenko. While New York City is home to the headquarters of the American Sambo Association and has one of the highest concentration of options for training Sambo in the United States, opportunities to train in the sport have only recently ventured east to Long Island.

The Rosati School was established as a karate dojo. However, the school does have a number of students already involved in Sambo, including taking home a gold medal at this year’s North American Sambo Championships. The seminar on the 15th may serve as a spring board for the school operating a full fledged Sambo program.

American Sambo Association president Stephen Koepfer, who will be running the seminar, says Rosati is one of a number of schools on Long Island that primarily train striking taking steps to include a Sambo program in their curriculum.

Though Sambo focuses mostly on grappling, Combat Sambo, a popular competitive rule set, allows for strikes and is similar to amateur MMA. Koepfer feels the eclectic nature of the sport will help other schools use what they already know as well as introduce new things into the curriculum.

“If [striking schools] are thinking rationally they understand they’re missing something,” said Koepfer. “Sambo offers them an attractive solution.”

“We’re working with [Long Island Schools] in baby steps, creating a foundation for a program,” Koepfer commented on the long-term expansion of Sambo programs on Long Island. “Expect to see good things from [Rosati] in time.”

The contents of the seminar will be gi grappling, working mostly with fundamentals such as falling, positional dominance, and some basic throws. Depending on the experience of those in attendance, some more advanced training will be available.

A children’s seminar will be held from 11:30am to 12:30pm, with the adult’s seminar taking place from 1pm to 4pm.
