Mixed martial artist Delson Heleno successfully defended his WFO welterweight title against Waachim Spiritwolf in the main event of the AOF 9 Apocalypse fight card at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. Sept. 4 which was hosted by the Tampa-based promotion, Art of Fighting.

While the title bout was scheduled for three rounds neither fighter was able to completely impose his will or a achieve a clear finish with a submission or TKO. But Heleno outscored Spiritwolf with several takedowns, submission attempts as well as more punches landed. Although Spiritwolf showed great submission defense skills against the jiu jitsu ace, Heleno, he struggled to find his rhythm and launch his own attack.

When the bout went to the judges' scorecards after three rounds it did not come as a surprise that Heleno was awarded the win via unanimous decision and retained his WFO belt, alongside his corner man and WFO Heavyweight Champion Marcio Cruz.

Fight of the Night

Imani Lee and Terry Blackburn earned the Fight of the Night honors for their super-heavyweight showdown that included mutual hard hits as well as a thorough clinch clinic. Based on Lee's strong kickboxing background he was able to stand his ground in the clinch while dishing out plenty of knees, elbows and punches. Therefore, Blackburn's attempt to neutralize Lee's striking power by controlling him in  the clinch seriously backfired. On the other side of the coin, Lee countered every one of Blackburn's attacks with at least one or two strikes of his own, leaving Blackburn no way to establish his dominance.

Apparently, the judges had a hard time keeping track of the clinch-action and almost synchronous striking which resulted in a split decision win for Lee.

Submission of the Night

Angelica Brotherton impressed in her MMA debut at AOF 9 with her submission of Tiffany Connell at 4:59 in round two which earned her Submission of the Night honors. Although Connell was showing great improvement of her ground game since her decision-loss against Katia Vitoria at AOF 7 last April she was not able to capitalize on several opportunities to submit Brotherton via guillotine choke. Brotherton, on the other hand, was clearly focused on a ground game as evident in her numerous takedowns of Connell in spite of both fighters' strong kickboxing background. As Connell was trying to escape Brotherton's vicious ground and pound from top control she tried to push her off with her outstretched arm which prompted an arm bar by Brotherton.

It must feel like salt in Connell's wound to realize that she would have been saved by the bell if only she would have been able to hold on one more second.

KO of the Night

Aaron Conway earned the KO of the Night honors for taking out James Harrison at 3:09 in round one with one the most destructive knees in AOF history. Although Harrison landed the first punch in this bout Conway immediately retaliated his efforts tenfold with a barrage of fists and knees that left Harrison barely surviving on the ground. When he got back on his feet Conway landed the final vicious knee which made Harrison collapse and prompted Referee Chris Adams to immediately call the fight while awarding Conway the win.
