CSAC changes MMA fighter clearance procedure

News from the CSAC Exec. Officer

NEWSFLASH: From Dave Thornton, Interim Executive Officer
The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC)

According to a recent CSAC Alert just received, the State of California is changing the way it clears fighters for events.  The following notice applies to all California licensed promoters effective January 1, 2010:

"The CSAC is finding it increasingly difficult to comply with its mandate to ensure all athletes receive proper clearance before being allowed to compete. This is caused by a number of factors including the past practice of allowing bouts to move forward anticipating promoters will provide the necessary clearance for the athletes before or at the scheduled weigh in.

In order to address this problem, the CSAC is instituting a number of measures including discontinuing this accommodation.

Therefore, effective January 1, 2010 the CSAC will not allow a proposed bout to move forward if the promoter has not provided Athletic Commission staff clearance for the athlete(s) from FightFax and/or MixedMartialArts.com at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled weigh in time.

The clearance required includes, but is not limited to, medical restrictions, suspensions, etc. No exceptions will be allowed as the law requires that all fighters be properly licensed and cleared by either FightFax or MixedMartialArts.com prior to competing.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation."

Seriously? So what this means is that the commission which oversees mixed martial arts events in the State of California is too busy to do their jobs, hence they're putting the oneous on the fighter, the promoter, FightFax and MixedMartialArts.com to govern themselves, in order to get approval by the state? Sounds like they haven't yet hired a permanent AC Executive Officer who is competent enough to make sure things run properly.

Well - at least you know that if you're a pro-MMA fighter from Knoxville, getting ready to fight at an event in California, make sure you have all your medicals completed in time, and that the promoter has properly registered you!

For more info: See the CSAC site here.
For Promoters:  Download a copy of the "PROPOSED BOUT CARD" form to submit to the state here. You can find a copy of a "REQUEST TO HOLD AN EVENT" form here.
For Fighters:  To get a copy of the "APPLICATION FOR AMATEUR ATHLETE" form, go here. To download a copy of the "Professional Boxer/Mixed Martial Arts/Kickboxing Athlete" form, go here.  (Word of caution to fighters:  per the CSAC, "You must submit the actual application form before or with your medical documents and other licensing materials. Medical documents will not be accepted without an application form on file in the office."
