The Baltimore Orioles have been in rebuilding mode for a while, carving out a spot at the bottom of the American League East division in recent years. A few good trades and some smart signings have this team looking forward to its future, however. What are the biggest questions for the Orioles as the 2010 season approaches?
- Pair of Aces: The Orioles should break camp with young starters Brian Matusz and Chris Tillman in their starting rotation. Both pitchers started a few games in the majors in 2009, but are they ready to pitch effectively over the long haul?
- Wieters’ Time: The Orioles are putting a lot on the shoulders of young catcher Matt Wieters, who made his major league debut in 2009. He will have a tremendous challenge ahead of him as he attempts to develop his offensive skills while playing a demanding defensive position (catcher), and leading a young team in the process.
- Veteran Impact: A few veteran faces have joined the Orioles team this offseason, including first baseman Garrett Atkins, closer Mike Gonzalez, starter Kevin Millwood, and third baseman Miguel Tejada. The Orioles have been criticized for spending too much on over-the-hill veteran players recently, but these four could be good complimentary pieces if the young stars produce.
New Faces: Tejada, Gonzalez, and Atkins were signed as free agents, and Millwood was acquired in a trade with the Texas Rangers.
