See, it actually does happen even in the independent leagues. Too many casual minor league baseball fans think that the independent league players don’t really have a chance of getting called to the majors. That isn’t the case, although it sometimes adds a level of difficulty. However, the majors do pay attention as is evidenced by the Colorado Rockies signing the impressive Windy City Thunderbolts outfielder Robert Perry to a contract for 2010.
Perry was initially signed by the San Diego Padres back in 2007. He started in the Padres Rookie club for 2007 and was then promoted to the Single-A Affiliate in Fort Wayne. He came to the Thunderbolts on June 27th after starting out the year playing for the Padres-affiliated team in Lake Elsinore.
Perry played 61 games with the Windy City Thunderbolts and his numbers were fairly impressive. He had a batting average of .397. He also managed to accumulate 83 hits while batting just over 200 times. He also proved himself reliable in the field and committed only 2 errors in 112 chances. He was also third on the list of the team’s best base-stealers with 20.
The Windy City Thunderbolts play in the independent Frontier League and are based out of Crestwood, Illinois. They won back-to-back league championships in 2007 and 2008. They made it to the playoffs again in 2009 but were eliminated quickly in the first round. They start the 2010 season at home on May 20.
