Getting kids to eat their vegetables

It’s summer and the kids are home from school, which means as a parent you have the opportunity to feed your kids healthy nourishing foods. Easier said than done? Well, it may be time to get a little sneaky. Rather than handing them a steaming bowl of cabbage with a big smile and expecting them to happily eat it, you can stealthily slip certain foods into a smoothie and they will not know the difference.

What could be a better, more refreshing breakfast on a hot summer day than a smoothie? If the right mix of ingredients are used, smoothies can deliver the nutrition kids need with the flavor they want. Smoothies have the added benefit of being quick and easy, so that time in the kitchen can be kept to a minimum.
Get the kids involved by making a double batch of the below smoothies and letting them make freezer pops for later.
These recipes are best made in a high-speed blender as it will process the ingredients best into a creamy, smooth and delicious blend where the vegetables are not noticeable. Remember to use organic whenever possible

Summer Fruit Surprise!
½ cup berries
¼ cup fresh peaches
¼ cup fresh grapes
1 cup baby spinach
2/3 cup ice
½ cup water or almond milk

Blend on high in a high-speed blender for one minute. The color will be lightly green, but the berries will tend to mask this. All your kids will taste is the sweet fruit, no spinach taste at all!

Popeye’s Protein Power
1 cup blueberries or raspberries
1 ripe banana
1 cup chopped celery or spinach
1 scoop high quality protein powder (chocolate or vanilla)
2/3 cup ice
½ cup water or almond milk

Blend on high in a high-speed blender for one minute. If chocolate protein powder is used, the green from the spinach will not be seen at all.

Orange-Almond Cream
2/3 cup raw soaked raw almonds or raw almond butter
1 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
1-2 raw carrots, chopped
1-2 stalks raw celery chopped
½ cup ice
agave nectar or stevia to taste

Blend on high in a high-speed blender for 1-2 minutes.
