Unfortunately, holiday weight gain is both feared and expected. However, there are ways to enjoy and indulge and not become a victim of the holiday bulge.
Below is the final food of three to avoid in order to steer clear of holiday weight gain, as well as some easy and flavorful substitutions to try.

#3 Sugar – This is often where people get a bit tripped up. Yes, it is a good idea to avoid white table sugar, but most people do not know that pasta, processed breads, white rice and even too much dried fruit can behave in a similar manner in the body. The short story is that these simple carbs are what are called high-glycemic and cause a rapid increase in blood sugar. This means that blood-glucose levels are increased quickly, which stimulates the pancreas to secrete insulin to drop blood-sugar levels. These rapid fluctuations of blood-sugar levels are not healthy because of the stress they place on the body. This promotes fat storage, suppresses the immune system and inhibits the release of growth hormones (which are desirable for healthy aging and weight).

Now, with an understanding of what the three foods are that can contribute to holiday weight gain, it is time to explore some delicious and healthy alternatives.

#1 Wheat
It’s everywhere and in everything, it seems. What to do if you want to enjoy baked goods and not miss out?
Try 100% sprouted breads and non-wheat products like quinoa, rice, almond and even coconut flours. Try this easy and absolutely delicious coconut crust.

#2 Dairy
Dairy offers a comforting texture and richness. How to not miss out and get your calcium too?
Try almond, hemp or coconut milk as a substitute. For calcium, be sure to get plenty of leafy green vegetables, almonds and sesame seeds.
In fact, a dairy-free nog is completely possible and absolutely delicious!

#3 Sugar
Sweet is a flavor that we need, but there are ways to get this without the problems of the processed, high-glycemic options listed above.
What to do? Try delicious low-glycemic alternatives like agave nectar, stevia and xylitol. Even real maple syrup and organic black strap molasses are better alternatives. Try these options in a healthy holiday nog, pie or even your tea.
