Well, the latest round of layoffs was announced last week. There’s nothing like those post-holiday and year end figures to set the decision makers and HR hatchet wielders into a fine tizzy and commotion. And there’s nothing like getting laid off to set the rest of us into a panicked frenzy. Rightfully so, but did you know that you are the least capable of making sound decisions when you need to the most? Actually, shutting off the self-regulation button and turning on the auto-pilot is very useful if you’re chasing the buffalo and suddenly realize the saber-toothed tiger is chasing you! Even though getting laid off may feel like the tigers are after you en masse, in this day and age, it is the time when you need to think smart the most.
For instance, before you set yourself out on that endless rollercoaster ride of thinking every job you apply for will turn up something promising, there are a few statistics you need to acquaint yourself with. Useful factoids like; more than 80% of all jobs are found through networking! Note: internet job boards are conspicuously absent there. In fact, internet job boards, while presenting the illusion of quick success, are only responsible for plugging people into jobs about 15% of the time. “Ouch!” you say? Not necessarily. Just realize if you want to make it off the unemployment lines you will have to get off your home office chair and out to meet people!
