Several incidences of sexual assault have occurred on the Bay Country Rail Trail in the last several months. The most recent incidences seem to involve the same youth, but other men are also exhibiting predatory behavior.
A teenager of about 15 or 16 assaulted two women – once on August 1, and a second time on August 4. The teen actually tried to push the first woman down, but he only groped the second as he rode by on his bicycle. Both women were assaulted on the Riverwalk in Veteran's Memorial Park.
Both women described the suspect as a teen male who was about 5 feet, 10 inches tall with longish, sandy-blond hair that went down to his eyes. The first victim said that his face was covered in acne and that he rode a black and green mountain bike. The second victim described the bike as silver.
On April 5, a woman who was using the rail trail in Hampton was grabbed by a man who tried to pull her into the woods, but she broke free. Another, similar incident occurred the same day.
People are still looking for these suspects. Call the Bay City Police Department at (989) 894-0161 with any information regarding these incidences. Report any new incidences.
Safety on the Bay City rail trail
The Bay City Loop is a 17.5-mile, paved rail trail from Bay City to Hampton. It is used for cycling, walking, running, inline skating, and cross country skiing. The police consider the trail to be safe, but advise that the appropriate precautions be taken.
Women should avoid the trail at night, exercise with a friend, and carry a cell phone. If attacked, women should always yell for help to draw attention. Pepper spray that is less than two percent is legal in Michigan, and is a very effective deterrent.
