The High Country Pathway is an IMBA Epic Trail located in Northeast Michigan that will be undergoing updates.  The Michigan Mountain Biking Association Northern Chapter is holding a free camping weekend complete with a trail work session and a mountain bike ride.  All are invited to volunteer.

Camping will be at the Clear Lake State Park group campground from Friday, September 24, 2010 through Sunday, September 26, 2010.  Campers will have access to showers, water, and other amenities at the regular campground.  Those wishing to camp in the modern campground may make personal reservations with the DNR to pay for their camping.

The state park is located at 20500 Michigan 33, Atlanta, Michigan 49709.

HCP Trail Improvements

The trail day will be Saturday September 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Volunteers will put up new signs as well as tend to any other tasks that may be necessary.  The Northern Chapter will provide lunch.

Those who volunteer on Saturday's trail day will be treated to a fun-filled
weekend including a group ride on the Epic High Country Pathway and free
camping at the Clear Lake State Park group campground.

Volunteers are asked to bring posthole diggers, shovels, cordless drills, and bubble levels, if possible.  Otherwise, all that is needed are motivated volunteers.  All volunteers should bring water and snacks for the work session.

Visit the MMBA Volunteer Forum for more information.

Epic Group Ride

A group ride will be held after Saturday's work session.  Riders of all levels can choose varying routes to enjoy the High Country Pathway and the Shingle Mill Pathway.  The fall colors should be out for a spectacular, scenic experience.

The IMBA Epic Trail Designation

The International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) works with advocacy groups all over the world to open and maintain access to mountain bike trails.  Their IMBA Trail Care Crew visits trails all over the country to teach volunteers how to build sustainable trails that resist erosion, provide a fun experience for riders of all levels, and minimize user impact on the surrounding environment.

The MMBA's volunteers are passionate about mountain biking and the trails they
ride. They welcome riders and volunteers of all levels to join in events to make
Michigan a better place to ride while developing lifelong friendships.

Some trails provide the ultimate riding experience and serve as examples of what great mountain bike trails can be.  According to IMBA, "Like the sport itself, the definition of an Epic will continue to evolve.  One theme remains unchanged: the [criterion] for the Epic designation is quality–quality trails, quality experience–something worth celebrating.  Whether you are into flowing singletrack, hang time, or a mega challenge, Epics feature something for everyone."

The Northern Chapter is part of the Michigan Mountain Biking Association (MMBA) and builds and maintains trails in the Northern Lower Peninsula. The MMBA is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit corporation.
