In a testament to how social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have become hot spots for political expression by the masses, Italian expert statue thrower, Massimo Tartaglia, has become the face of the Italian younger generation anxious to remove Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi from power. Missimo Tartaglia is the man Italian authories have in custody and is believed to have hurled the small plaster statue at Berlusconi that landed with a sickening crack as it connected with the teeth and bone of Prime Minister Berlusconi.
Since then the event has captured the emotions of an Italian underground movement anxious for change in Italy, Massimo Tartaglia's Facebook fan page has literally blown up with fans from all over the world supporting the blunt message behind Tartaglia's actions .
Meanwhile one can only wonder the ways and secret thinkings of a media mogul like PM Berlusconi. he still holds most of the power in Italy and he has played up his recent clashes with the opposition to the media. After getting hit with the statue, blood flowing from his face, he emerged from his limousine to say goodbye to the crowd, then he was quickly taken to a hospital.
It remains to be seen how this will play out in the Italian media, whether groups that want the billionaire out of office can use this to their advantage is going to be difficult.
This reminds me of another time a politician came face to face with violence while in office. The circumstances are different but their are similarities, 69 days after President Ronald Reagan took office in 1981 he was shot, his demeanor and character after the shooting captured the imagination of the United states public across party and racial lines. The Hollywood actor and former California Governor had the stage set for becoming a living legend while in office. George H. W. Bush later became the torch bearer of all that Karma, Republicans have been trying to no avail to capture the magic that Reagan brought to the world stage ever since.
In the video below CNN's Mohammed Jamjoom mistakenly describes the incident as a punch. This is about the fourth report I have heard coming from CNN that has the story wrong. Somebody please call the kids in the newsroom in Atlanta and tell them to get it fixed. They must have went out last night. Do they even watch the videos at CNN in Atlanta before they rehash news off the wire services?

E' a dir poco vergognoso che un uomo abbia potuto compiere un gesto cosi' violento nei confronti di Berlusconi o chiunque altro uomo,politico o non politico. Ogni uomo a diritto di esprimere la propria idea, opinione, ma la violenza e' una vergogna... mi vergogno di essere italiana. tutto quest'odio non porta da nessuna parte.mi dispiace e mi sento personalmente ferita per il gesto di un pazzo, che non merita la liberta' e spero che venga punito per come sia giusto.

Nobody's accepting the violence, but in Italy there's a disgusting way to excercise the power: they took big facebook groups, like "Sosteniamo l'Abruzzo" ("Support Abruzzo" the region striked by the terrible earthquake in june) and changed them, during the night, in groups supporting Berlusconi, without any consent of the million users already in. A lot of groups have changed their name during the night, (even some in favour of Tartaglia himself) just for give the opportunity to say on television "Thousands of people support Berlusconi on Facebook". The physical violence is disgusting, in the exact same way this disgusting way to create fake consensus is.

hi clifford , your analysis is smart, for sure berlusconi’s opponents will face a hard time. on the other hand I have been discussing with friend about the role of facebook in Italy. it has become a shelter for "internal exiliates”, well educated guys on their thirties and fourties refusing to watch tv channels fully controlled by mr. B.
It was a bad think what Massimo did. However, Bellusconi has a big mouth and nobody could do much to shut him up. He probably asked for it.
He is a wealthy man and controls most of the Italian media. He is a buffoon when he speaks. He reminds me of Mussolini. He changed the laws to protect himself from convictions. When the Italian Supreme Court found the laws to be unconstitutional he accused the jurists be leftists, who are trying to get him.
