The Miami Dolphins shuffle players like card dealers at a casino. Four days after cutting guard Corey Procter, Miami has brought him back onto the roster. Fired Thursday was veteran center Jake Grove, who just last year, signed a five-year 29 million dollar contract.
Grove competed with Joe Berger for the starting center spot all preseason. In fact they alternated places more than any other position on the team as the coaches evaluated which player was best suited to protect their quarterback Chad Henne from the middle of the line.
Despite his great talent, Grove simply couldn't stay healthy and the Dolphins have shown they are willing to cut an injured player, especially if there's an equal or better option. Just ask TE Joey Haynos or G Randy Thomas. Both players were waived soon after suffering injuries in the preseason.
Grove suffered leg and shoulder injuries this preseason. His shoulder injury was the nail in the coffin because it happened in Miami's third preseason game. The team obviously tried to hold on to him but they couldn't risk another injury, despite the fact he looked healthy and participated in practice this week.
Procter surely breathed a sigh of relief. His contract was terminated by the Dolphins on Sunday but Miami changed its mind and decided to bring him back in time for the season opener. He was complimented all preseason for his great footwork and ability to hit hard at the point of attack which made it a huge surprise when he was initially cut.
But everyone is entitled to correct their decisions and the Dolphins did just that, believing Procter at guard would be more of an asset than Grove as the back-up center.
Procter signed with the Dolphins as a free agent in May after playing in 12 games with the Cowboys last season.
Grove started his career in Oakland as a second round draft pick in 2004 before being signed to the huge contract in 2009 by the Dolphins. The upside for Grove is despite the termination of his contract, he still walks away with $14.5 million guaranteed.
The revamped Miami Dolphins take on the Buffalo Bills in their regular season opener, Sunday at 1pm eastern.
