Mamey smoothie
I fell in love with a fruit called mamey many years ago thanks to a paletero (a street vendor who sells paletas, or popsicles and ice cream bars). He sold me a mamey flavored paleta that has been my favorite ever since.
Mamey is a fleshy tropical fruit that is brown on the outside and bright reddish-orange in color on the inside. It is naturally sweet and pairs very well with dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and ice cream.
Licuado de mamey
Ingredients:
- 8 oz frozen mamey pulp (I use Goya brand)
- 2 cups 2% milk
- 1 cup vanilla ice cream (optional)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- sugar to taste (if at all)
Directions:
Place all ingredients in a blender jar and blend well. Serve immediately. Yield: 4 cups
Note: I suggest using frozen mamey pulp because even though fresh mamey will infrequently make an appearance at the local Mexican grocery store, they are not at all common. In addition to this, they are also usually expensive and it can be difficult to tell if they are ripe and/or of good quality until after you have purchased it and cut it open.

Amy- Could you show us a photo of this, and tell us where to buy them, and how to select the best? Thanks. This sounds delicious!
I love mamey and we Cubans also make the liquado, except we call it 'batido de mamey'...just different name for the same delicious milk shake!
You right Amy, this licuado de Mamey is delicious, but I prefer used the real fruit not the one the is frozen I know is hard to find it and expensive too but is worth it.
