The book Unplugging the Patriarchy: A Mystical Journey into the Heart of a New Age by Lucia René, delves into the psychic and mystical journeys of three women as they explore the power structures of the world. When speaking with Lucia, she shared her definitions of what constitutes a psychic and a mystic.
Mysticism is defined in different ways by different groups and lineages, she said. The Sufis define it one way. There have been Christian mystics, and there are many other definitions. She believes we are all psychic at birth but lose the faculty due to this world’s inclination to allow the logical mind to dominate.
Her definition is that psychic perception is the ability to see things in alternate dimensions. We have the third dimension and many times we assume that is the only reality, but she believes there are an infinite number of dimensions that intersect and overlap. So a psychic is someone who can see things in these other dimensions. A mystic, on the other hand, is someone who can see things but also enter into those alternate dimensions and make changes there. A mystic can transmute energies there.
According to Lucia, the seven chakras—energy centers in the subtle, non-physical body— are gateways to other worlds. The third chakra, which is about power and is located just below the physical navel, is the point where the mystic exits the physical and enters into other dimensions.
Neither psychic nor mystic abilities pertain to intellectual knowledge. You don’t learn to be psychic, and you don’t learn to be a mystic by having someone explain it to you, although teachers do explain from time to time. In her system of belief, there is a transference of knowledge that happens between the teacher and the student. Your awareness field is mapping, or feeling what their awareness field is doing, and mimicking it, learning through association.
It’s possible for anyone to remember how to be psychic, to begin to own their own intuition and to remember how to perceive psychically. But mysticism is a little bit different because Lucia believes not everyone is wired for it. They don’t have the operating system for it. She believes it takes someone who is very interested in the mechanics of energy, a more technical study, to be a mystic.
