Life Beyond 100 - the Gift of Health and Vitality

As the new year approaches, we'll raise our glasses in a toast to health, wealth and prosperity. When we enjoy good health, all things are possible and we have the energy and vitality to create and manifest our goals and dreams. Continuing our 12 Days - 12 Gifts of Enlightement series, the countdown marches on as we're moving on to Gift Number 7, which is: Give the Gift of Health and Vitality.

The awareness of a Body-Mind and Spirit cohesion, manifests the enlightened human in all forms - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. This connection has been taught in esoteric spirituality throughout the ages and now is recognized in the realms of science as quantum physics discerns that every cell carries energy and vibration and can be affected by conscious thought. In the new millennium, east and west philosophies are metaphorically shaking hands, agreeing to work together to blend contemporary scientific knowledge with ancient wisdom integrative practices from India, China and Egypt. Emerging from this partnership, is the return and renewal of holistic medicine, which focuses on pro-active patterns of creating and continuing to keep the body in a harmonic state of wellness, rather than having the body descend into a pattern of illness or dis-ease, in which attention is then turned to the body for repair.

As this transformation of awareness in the body occurs, a critical missing link has resurfaced -- the importance of holistic nutrition to sustain and nourish the body from the cellular level onward to create harmony and vitality. Dr. Deanna M. Minich, a guest on the Explore Your Spirit show, is a nutritionist, researcher and counselor with a Ph.D. in medical sciences and human nutrition. Author of Chakra Foods for Optimum Health, her new book is : Quantum Supplements: A Total Health and Wellness Makeover with Vitamins, Minerals and Herbs.

Dr. Minich's informational guide explains the concept of vibrational energy-healing in foods and reveals the life affirming properties of vitamins, minerals, herbs and botanicals including how they activate and balance the body's natural energy centers and chakras. Of equal importance, she discusses contraindications, which explain how too much of a particular supplement can be harmful, which has been a much neglected area of study in the field of supplements. This go to guide will serve as a handy reference for years to come and makes a great gift for the holidays and new year. Imagine receiving a gift basket full of books on holistic health and healing, complete with a selection of organic foods and fresh fruits and vegetables, which verily abounds with good energy.

To create your gift basket of health, also add any of the works of Dr. Norm Shealy. Legendary neurosurgeon and holistic health leader, Dr. Norman Shealy was instrumental in creating The American Holistic Medical Association, which continues to emphasize the spiritual component of healing. Holding over ten patents for innovative discoveries and author of over 24 books, his latest is Life Beyond 100 - Secrets of the Fountain of Youth. Dr. Shealy discusses leading-edge therapies and breakthroughs in the science of longevity. By following commonsense habits, we can expect to achieve an average lifespan of one hundred years. The fountain of youth according to Dr. Shealy, includes a practice and awareness of mind and body techniques which contribute to active, vital healthy living. His interview on Life Beyond 100, can be heard here in the archives of the Explore Your Spirit with Kala show.

Another fine edition to add to the collection is from co-founder of the Chopra Center, Dr. David Simon. Dr. Simon is a mind-body physician and author of Free to Love, Free to Heal: Heal Your Body by Healing Your Emotions. He shares that negative emotions can be addressed and resolved, which can lead the body into healing. His book delves into why masking symptoms will never alleviate the root of the problem and discusses how to take responsibility for your illness but not take blame and why managed care is not working and what to do instead. For more information, listen to my interview with Dr. Simon here.

For the holistically connected metaphysician in your life, I highly recommend these books and studies as stimulating reading. Perhaps the best gift we have received in the 21st century is the revolutionary turn that the field of medicine is taking - as more and more physicians are speaking out about health and healing and sharing their revelations and new discoveries. A plethora of books are now available sharing the fascinating research ongoing with the body-mind-spirit connection. To find out about more leading edge research in this field, visit the Healthy Holistic Living archives of Explore Your Spirit and listen to a wide variety of interviews with the world's leading doctors and researchers as they share their findings on this topic.

Perhaps the best gift we can give or receive is as the old adage states, "to stop and smell the roses". Taking the time each day to adopt simple practices such as breathing deeply, creating ten minute mental breaks and gentle stretching can provide tremendous benefit to our well-being. After working for hours hunched over a computer screen, lean back and stretch! Stand up and slowly take a deep breath in and blow out. Stretch your arms over your head. Gently turn side to side and stretch your body slowly, feel each muscle as it is stretched, while breathing in a slow, relaxed manner. Be aware of your body, your neck, your shoulders, back, arms, and hands. Work your way gently down your body, stretching each part and while doing so, continue to breathe deeply and connect with your body, silently thanking it for all that it does for you.

This can also be done while sitting at your desk, sit back for a moment, relax your arms and stretch. A simple three minute break of stretching, combined with deep breathing and relaxing, can clear your thoughts and bring renewed energy to your body, making you feel better and create renewed clarity and focus to the project on hand.

Simple, yet highly effective, these gifts are easy and the rewards are long lasting. "Bona valetudo melior est quam maximae divitiae". Translation: “Good health is worth more than the greatest wealth.”
