As 21st century scientific research grows more innovative, the results reveal more about consciousness on a personal and global scale. At the 2009 World Science Festival, which was held June 10-14 in New York, scientists, artists, researchers, authors, policy makers and nobel laureates gathered to discuss and debate scientific theories. The mission of the World Science Festival according to their website is "...to cultivate and sustain a general public informed by the content of science, inspired by its wonder, convinced of its value, and prepared to engage with its implications for the future. The World Science Festival, an unprecedented annual tribute to imagination, ingenuity and inventiveness, takes science out of the laboratory and into the streets, theaters, museums, and public halls of New York City, making the esoteric understandable and the familiar fascinating".
A plethora of events were discussed including: What it Means to be Human: The Enigma of Altruism, Rising Waters in a Thirsty World , Infinite Worlds, Navigating the Cosmos, Battlestar Galactica: Cyborgs on the Horizon, and the Da Vinci Detective.
During a unique panel on Notes and Neurons: In Search of the Common Chorus, the presenters discussed this question: "Is our response to music hard-wired or culturally determined? Is the reaction to rhythm and melody universal or influenced by environment"? Host John Schaefer, scientist Daniel Levitin and musical artist Bobby McFerrin illustrated the interaction between the brain, music and emotions. In the video shown here taken during this panel discussion, Bobby McFerrin (best known for his song, Don't Worry, Be Happy) demonstrates the natural inclination of the human brain to connect with the pentatonic scale, perhaps proving the point that music is the universal language.
What does this say about us on a global level? Could we compose a harmonic union like the old song from a cola commercial... "I'd like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony... I'd like to see the world for once, all standing hand in hand, and hear them echo through the hills, ah, peace throughout the land"...
It appears that we are all aligned on a higher consciousness level to attune with certain rhythms and melodies. Is there a particular frequency or sound in our universe, that we and all life on earth aligns with? How does music, sound and vibration affect us and with this knowledge, can we discover the effect it has on each of us? In ancient mystery temples, it was taught that certain tones and vibrations could help to heal and in some cases, break up blockages and disturbances in the body.
What are your thoughts on sound and consciousness, do you see a connection?
