The Symbols on the Fool Card:
The Fool is seen as a young man with the exuberance of a child. He walks with his head up unaware of the cliff drop in front of him. The sun shines behind him representing divinity and the wisdom he has left behind to follow this new path. He carries all his belongings in a handkerchief on a stick. The only possessions that he needs are the one he can carry on his back. In his hands he holds a flower which represents beauty. At his feet, a dog playfully yips at his feet. The animal represents reality. A companion that (if he pays attention) will keep him from walking off the cliff.
The Meaning of the Fool Card:
The Fool card is the beginning and ending of a journey. In most decks he is represented by the number O, in others he is 22. This is because we all start as the Fool and upon completion return again to the innocence of this card as we begin the leg of our next journey.
The Fool stands for the querent and the newness he feels at the start his new path. He is optimistic and filled with the innocence of youth.
The Fool doesn't know where he is going or how he is going to get there. He walks along the path in blind faith with an optimism that everything is going to work out. His strength is that he is able to see the world with a child-like wonder and therefore tap into the pool of infinite possibilities.
Conversely, the same innocence and optimism that fuels the Fool can be his demise. He may be too focused on blind faith to see the pitfalls that pebble his path.
The lesson of the Fool is to go with the flow and enjoy the spontaneity and newness of the journey. But also to listen to your inner guidance to keep from ignoring any pitfalls along the way.
