Continuing to build on the subtle fury that was 2006’s “In The Absence Of Truth”, prog-metal cult heroes Isis have created the next in the band’s every evolving puzzle in the recently released “Wavering Radiant”.
As the previous album pushed the melody even farther than the atmospheric sound than their 2004 record “Panopitcon”, the Los Angeles based band found themselves being compared to Tool by a lot of first timers to the band. But the band or it’s fans never really took that as a bad thing, as it allowed the band to explore new sounds that found their band in territories that the previously mentioned other band maybe hadn’t explored in the past.
But “Wavering Radiant” is an impressive step in the next direction of the band. If you were a fan of the material in “Truth”, the material here is going to seem like the next logical step for the band. Songs like “Ghost Key” and “Hand Of The Host” all clock over 8 minutes long and features plenty of intricate and meticulous musicianship, but never really acts like it drags on. Lead singer Aaron Turner’s vocals are a bit more prominent on this record as his melodic moments match his fierce growls that he does from time to time. This is definitely the type of album that makes you want to put on your headphones and gaze at a lava lamp (if they still make those things). It’s as close to a “chill metal” album as you’ll ever get.
Isis is currently on the road here in the States through June 24th, when the band wraps in Los Angeles. But before that, Isis hits Hamtramck as the band plays Small’s this Thursday (June 11th). It’s a show that if you may be very sorry if you miss it.
Isis plays at Small’s in Hamtramck on Thursday, June 11th. Tickets are $13 and are available at www.smallsbardetroit.com. Additional band info and dates are available at www.isistheband.com.
