Lacuna Coil is a well known Italian based alternative metal band with roots in gothic rock and with the release of “Shallow Life” in April 2009, there still remains elements of their roots. The album begins with the track titled “Survive,” beginning with an eerie melody and then transforming into a blend of heavy guitars and catchy vocals lines. This track very effectively sets the mood for the album, dominated by melody but still retaining an electronic hard rock sound. This is where Lacuna Coil really shows their efforts to retain their roots while still being able to evolve their music and develop.
“Wide Awake,” the ninth track on the album begins with an acoustic guitar and especially stands out from the rest of the album. The piano and orchestral arrangements on this track really help it stand out from the standard rock ballad and show what the band is really capable of. The combination of both male and female vocals throughout the entire album are arranged to near perfection, having two vocalists is something that many bands have a hard time pulling off effectively. This album is highly recommended to fans of Evanescence, Stabbing Westward, and Nine Inch Nails.
