"Lords of Chaos" film breeds discontent in the black metal scene

Lords of Chaos Book cover

In September, filming will begin for the up-coming movie “Lords of Chaos,” which is based upon the book Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind. The film, like the book, is centered around a series of murders and church arsons that took place in Norway in the early 1990s with the rise of the black metal scene.

If the comment sections of sites such as Roadrunner.com, metalunderground.com and the petition to stop the production of the movie are any indication, the black metal scene at large is displeased with the prospect of making a movie on the topic. The objections are twofold. The first being that the movie must necessarily compromise the content of the book, and thus the portrayal of the subject matter. As a result, detractors feel the film will only serve to bring more people with no understanding of black metal into the scene and compromise both the social and music aspects of black metal.

The second objection is that Varg Vikernes, who is the focal point of the book, is slated to be portrayed by Jackson Rathbone, who played Jasper in the first Twilight movie. The source of this seems to be disdain for Twilight, the actor, and the Twilight fan base. Black metal fans are concerned that, with Rathbone in the role of Vikernes, the movie will trigger an influx of alt-trend hopping teens and tweens to the film and scene, resulting in a “kvlt versus kvte” conflict.

Also displeased is Vikernes himself, recently released from prison for the murder Øystein Aarseth, of who wrote on his site that “The vast majority of all the statements made in this book are either misinterpretations; taken out of context; misunderstandings; malicious lies made by enemies; a result of ignorance; extreme exaggerations; and/or third-hand information at best. This includes the statements attributed to me!” Vikernes also claims “They have managed to fill the heads of a generation of metal fans with lies.”

Directed by Sion Sono, the movie is slated to be a teen film and a psychological horror movie, according to producer Stuart Pollok.

As a long-time metal fan (some black - not to into the Satan thing)I have to agree with the detractors. Let this lie, Varg served his sentence (not enough for murder!), and the use of Rathbone in the lead role will bring out the horde of little teenies that will latch on the Varg's persona due to the fact that he was/is a handsome Nordic guy. I am a female so I feel comfortable admitting that; not a wise decision maker, but good looking.

The Scandinavian & Finnish metal scenes already have an influx of little girls who have no clue. Now the fires (no pun intended) will be stoked again to open up all of the wounds. What's next a movie about Dead from Mayhem - I hope not. Tragic.

The link to Vikernes's website is incorrect, the official Burzum site is actually www.burzum.org.

Well, if it's based on the LoC book, then Dead will make an appearance...
Also, not just Varg, but all the others involved in the early scene will have their pasts dragged up. Many of these people have now grown up, have families of their own and have put their youth behind them.

Hopefully this movie is destroyed before any filming is actually done. It would be sad to see such production made about BM filling the heads of people who've never experienced BM with lies. Let them think what they will, but don't attempt to create scorn against us, don't lie about it as you have never experienced, do us all a favor and stop your antagonizing and leave us be.

Being one of those who have actually grew up white the metal scen in Norway and being a great fan of the music I actually think it`s a shame that black metal is going to be something for the average teen. Black metal is all about the atmospher around the music. Teen girls who think it`s "cool" are not a part of this atmospher. A movie like this want do BM any good

Please dont release this movie. I can't believe this was even a consideration. This ruins a lot of things for metal fans! including ME! I use metal as my gimmick in pro wrestling, now this come out as a mainstream movie so all the hollister kids can think they know something about METAL!
