A huge part of student recognition is honoring the gifts that they give to you. Those gifts can range from a piece of artwork they did for their art class to a letter they wrote to you when they were having difficulties.  Maybe it's just a Post-It note simply saying, "Hi"!  No matter what, all of it constitutes treasure, and when you communicate that to your students, they feel that much more validated and special.  These concepts are so very important for every teenager, especially ones who are at risk.  It's amazing how treasuring a letter from a kiddo can build trust and help him/her connect with an adult who will advocate for them.  So many kids are surprised when they find out that you have kept everything they have given to you.  At the same time, these are the same kids who have kept everything you have given to them... Birthday certificates, Research completion certificates, Team encouragement certificates, Friendship Sticks....  The list goes on and on, hence, that will be the topic of my next article:  Teen Recognition--They don't grow out of it.
