You are fired!

“You are fired!” can be the most traumatizing three words you will hear in your professional career. These words are even harder to hear in today’s troubling economic times. It does not matter if you are a female or a male it can be devastating event especially if you are the head of your household. Some find it difficult to move past the termination and get on with their lives. Being fired does not have to be a negative event; in fact, it could be the motivation you need to find a job that truly makes you happy.

However, before you are able to move on, some people may have to experience an emotional setback that is similar to the grief process. The process length varies based on the individual. Some of the feelings you may experience are:

1. Disbelief / shock
2. Denial
3. Panic
4. Overwhelmed
5. Depression
6. Sense of failure

How do you recover and move on? Once you have gone through the job separation process you can plan your next career move. Here are a few basic steps to get you started:

1. Research careers that interest you
2. Try volunteering in your area interest to it out
3. Determine the additional skills set needed
4. Network with people in your career choice

Although you may not be able to realize it now, being told “You are fired” can be the best thing that has happened to you. Make the most of this time and focus on selecting a career that allows you to be passionate about the work you are doing.
