Bravo
The reality series “Real Housewives of…” sets an all new precedent for today’s women. It should really be called “What a Bitch You Can Become with Too Much Money and Free Time.”
The show, which aims to highlight the true lives of women across the country, is proving that today’s value system is incredibly flawed, as the cast acts as if one’s character is far less important that socioeconomic status and physical appearance. The women in these shows are setting terrible examples for their daughters and the young women of our nation, displaying such behavior as superficiality, materialism, nastiness, diva-like tantrums, disloyalty, untrustworthiness, and severe cases of “Keeping up with the Jones’” syndrome. These “housewives” frequently compete over their false sense of moralities, and many have extremely unrealistic expectations of what their lives should be. With today’s economic disaster, these women are completely irresponsible with their spending, encouraging viewers to live above their means and waste money on frivolous items like spray tans and bigger breasts. Even more disturbing are the thousands of young women that are being influenced by the housewives, dreaming of the day they too will have an entire closet of shoes and husbands to boss around.
Of course, not all of the women on these programs are all bad. There are a few that show true goodwill toward others and are great parents and successful businesswomen. Some have made their dreams come true with honest hard work and are now celebrating their much-deserved fortunes. However, the majorities of these women have very dysfunctional outlooks on the world around them and are quick to share their delusions with anyone that will listen. Their constant verbal diarrhea is nauseating and their downright cattiness is positively shameful.
Each different city in the “Real Housewives” series shows women behaving badly:
Orange County: The Stepford wives…oops, I meant “housewives,” live for plastic surgery, drink day and night, and have awful parenting skills. Clad in gaudy nails and stripper-like Lucite heels, these women turn the other cheek when their children misbehave and talk back, oftentimes even encouraging such deplorable actions as underage drinking. My personal favorite is their tendency to bleach their hair, as if being blonde will somehow differentiate them from the other blonde wives in Orange County.
Atlanta: I was looking forward to this series and expected to see strong, cultured, respectful Black women in America. However, most of these Georgia Peaches have a ridiculous sense of entitlement, treating their husbands’ hard-earned money like it’s their right to spend, rather than a privilege. Even the single women shop in the most ostentatious ways, indulging in ludicrous shopping sprees. Simply because someone has the resources to order 10 pairs of $1,200 shoes, doesn’t mean they should. It’s sickening to watch the manner in which these women consume, consume, consume and believe they are better women for it. They behave worse than teenagers with their clique-y behavior and in-your-face antagonism.
New York: The housewives of the Big Apple have turned charity into competition, using their various organizations and benefits as ways to one-up each other instead of actually helping the less fortunate. Charity work should never be used to flaunt one’s name but these women have made a game into who can get into the better party. The importance they place on being members of the “social elite” has trumped the value of good parenting, hard work, and humility. Though they love to brag about their perfect high-class etiquette, they are the first to backstab, publically trash-talk and judge their co-stars, and loudly argue amongst themselves with no regard to their “elite” surroundings.
New Jersey: The newest wives thrive on sheer gluttony, taking pride in behaving like Mafia wives who can order everyone around their huge houses and have no regard to their surroundings. Though their bank accounts may be flush, these women show how little class they really have with their constant bitching and arguing.
I don’t know about you, but these are not “real” housewives! They typical housewife is busting her butt with cleaning, raising children, working, organizing, and nurturing their marriages. They carpool, get snacks for the class party, organize bake sales, help run their husbands’ businesses and mow the lawn, usually wearing sweats or jeans, not Jimmy Choos. Women today are involved in their communities, heading up grass-roots campaigns to incite change around the globe. Real American mothers use their money to better their kids’ lives and futures, creating safe homes, and helping the environment. They don’t spend every last dime on jewelry and couture fashions. They cultivate strong friendships instead of plotting ways to spread gossip to embarrass “friends” at social events and in front of the media.
The “Real Housewives” are flawed, flashy, and fake. Ladies, it’s time to stand up, and be the fabulous, first-class, and fierce women that are the backbone of our nation.
Make it an Excuse Free life and always remember, “It’s not the size of the problem, but the size of the feeling.”

I agree. They must find the worst women they can to be on those shows. It's nauseating and a slap in the face to women everywhere...
Thanks you Dr. Leslie for finally saying it! The housewives are a disgrace and give real women a bad name!
You have to admit the "housewives" on these shows are quite absurd, but deliciously entertaining. Compared to these women I feel like I live on a different planet. I'm sure most of us think we are far more authentic and altruistic than they are, but I wonder how we would behave if we were in their shoes.
I agree with you, Karen. Their very absurdity is what make them so entertaining. I know their behavior is deplorable, but it is so "out there" that I feel it must be staged. After a long day of being a housewife and mother, I really do get some entertainment value, albiet limited, from these women. Hey, honestly, look at the men in their lives. Now there is a train wreck. Is Bobby a Soprano wannabe? And Mario? Ramona has much bigger problems than her "crazy eyes", we all know that. I don't think the "housewives" give real women a bad name. They simple pander to our desire to chill out at the end of the day and have a couple laughs at their expense. I doubt they know or even care how much we do laugh. It's all in a day's work for them.
Thank you for calling "real housewives" out for what they really are. Shallow self centered egomaniacs. If that is a representation of what "real" people are like we have far more serious issues than the economy!
