Raf Simons is shaping the future. With only the slightest nod to the past, a mere acknowledgment that something existed prior to his idea of what clothing for men should look like, Raf Simons is constructing a new foundation on which fresh new lines of clothing can be built. This is no small feat considering how closed-minded the world of men's fashion tends to be.
When was the last time you saw a shrug for men that wasn't weird or downright objectionable? When was the last time you saw a shrug for men, period?
Simons has incorporated this rather obscure permutation of the bolero jacket so beautifully and seamlessly that it is hard to imagine his Fall 2009 collection without it.
On top his use of the shrug to re-contour silhouettes and broaden the color palette of his classic, trim-line suits he's gone a step farther and made some of them out of a neoprene-like material. The affect is light, almost floating, while remaining very structural and surprisingly well integrated in its presentation.
Simons seems to love the details of things. His implementation of unusual shapes, colors and materials is daring and imaginative. His Fall 2009 collection pushes the boundaries of men's fashion far enough to make one take notice without fully crossing over into what most would consider experimental.

I'm all for expanding the fashion vocabulary for menswear. This look strikes me as Star Trek NG uniforms.
