Men's underwear. It's a multibillion dollar industry. Did you know that? It's kind of hard to imagine but it is true. In fact, the "underwear index" has recently been used to forecast economic trends. That's how big of a deal underpants can be.
As mentioned here back in April, "just about everybody wears them, hardly anyone sees them, and nobody talks about them...except me." Since it's been a while, now seems like the perfect time to bring the subject up again. Consider yourself introduced to PACT, the undergarment company whose motto is "change starts with your underwear."
PACT is special. PACT isn't some mega-corporate-mart manufacturer that just happens to make underwear. PACT makes underwear and their approach is unlike any other.
PACT, out of Berkeley CA, starts with a fabric that is comprised of 95% organic cotton with 5% elastane mixed in to make things stretchy where they need to be and to help the garment retain its shape and ensure its long life. The growing, processing, spinning, knitting or weaving, dyeing, printing, cutting and sewing of the cotton that goes into every pair of PACT underpants takes place within 100 miles of the factory. What this means is that even though their Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified factory is located in Turkey, the overall carbon footprint of their supply chain is significantly smaller than if they were to make the same product with a geographically fragmented supply chain in the United States.
If that's not enough to win you over, PACT has also formed partnerships with three nonprofit organizations dedicated to positive change in our world. 10% of each sale goes to one of the following causes:
- Forest Ethics - "Protecting endangered forests and wildlife around the world"
- Oceana - "The largest international organization focused solely on ocean conservation"
- 826 National - "Dedicated to mentoring and inspiring our next generation of young writers"
If you are the kind of guy who wears underwear, cares about the impact we all impart on our little planet and is even slightly interested in taking part in some sort of positive change in our world then PACT are the people you should be buying your underwear from. This simple gesture sends a message to companies who aren't currently making sustainable products, involving themselves in equitable business practices or investing in good causes that maybe they ought to consider it, that maybe the bottom line isn't the only thing they should be focused on. Remember, "change starts with your underwear."
