Jeff Barker from the Baltimore Sun wrote an interesting article about how the University of Maryland athletics department is cutting back the budgets of its biggest programs.
According to Barker's story, the football team is trimming $301,535 from its 2009 budget. This is happening by increasing bus usage for away trips and not printing media guides. The men's basketball team will spend $137,786 less, and the women's team will chop off $61,583 from its budget.
I can't say I'm surprised by these moves but I wonder how much is needed to be saved and if the right things are being cut? It would be interesting to see what cost-cutting measures other ACC schools are doing to save cash. Same goes for Penn State.

If the men's basketball and football program were winners, there would be no cuts. When is the last time a Gary Williams recruit graduated from MD within 5 years? It is not like he is recruiting pro prospects. The fat man has not had a good squad since he started recruiting? Do his players graduate?
The women's program is a national powerhouse and it is loaded with student/athletes. What's up with that?
