Former Terrapins standout wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey was surprised, just like pretty much everyone else when he was drafted No. 7 overall by the Oakland Raiders. I always thought Heyward-Bey was deserving of being drafted in the first-round but never really saw him as getting picked that high. Here's to hoping Al Davis doesn't find a way to mess up his new receiver's career.
Along with Heyward-Bey, four other Terps were drafted by NFL teams, but not in the first round.
Cornerback Kevin Barnes, a Maryland native, isn't going that far to play pro ball. He was chosen with the 16th choice in the third round (80th overall) by the Washington Redskins. Barnes was caught a little off-guard that he was chosen by the Skins but couldn't be happier to don the burgundy and gold. Moise Fokou, Jaimie Thomas, and Dan Gronkowski were all taken in the seventh round. That was not the end of it for former Terps football players. Six were signed to undrafted free agent deals, including two who hope to stick with Barnes on the Redskins. The information below was provided by the University of Maryland.
