Terps make tournament, will face scuffling Cal

Greivis and Gary might be celebrating again on Thursday

The Terps are dancing again.

No. 10 seed Maryland will face off against No. 7 seed California Thursday in Kansas City. If the Terps win, they’ll likely face No. 2 seed Memphis in the second round.

The Terps should be thrilled with their pairing. California has lost four of its last six games and Maryland is playing some of its most consistent and passionate basketball of the season.

Cal is 22-10 overall and 11-7 in the Pac-10. Its best wins came over then-No.17 Arizona State and then-No. 22 Washington.

Cal’s specialty is the 3-point shot. The team shot an amazing 43 percent from downtown on the season. But the Bears aren’t known for their defense.

The Bears are led by junior guard Jerome Randle, who averages 18.4 ppg and shoots 47 percent from downtown. Cal has good size (its starters go 5-foot-10, 6-foot-5, 6-foot-6, 6-foot-8 and 7-foot-0), which might give the Terps trouble.

Even making the tournament is a tremendous accomplishment considering the flaws on Maryland’s roster and the drama surrounding the team at various points throughout the season.

But the Terps are primed for even bigger things -- a win over Cal and an appearance in the round of 32.

I'm going with Cal. Montgomery is a slightly better coach and Cal will be the hungrier team. I expect super-frosh Jorge Gutierrez to come off the bench and wreak havoc on the Terp offense, providing the slight edge in a close game.

Yeah, except Cal really folded near the end of the season. Terps all the way!

"To crush your enemies -- See them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women!"

pretty much what Maryland is going to do to Cal on Thursday. Cal will be tired from the early start time (like their football team in 2008). Vasquez will score 22pts and shut down their Cal's PG "tiny tim"
