The similarities between dance and martial arts are numerous.  Forms or katas are performed to certain rhythms.  Each step of these pre-arranged forms are reminiscent of step-by-step dance moves.  Few martial arts resemble dance as closely as the South American art of capoeira.  Characterized by high flying and acrobatic kicks, capoeira truly demonstrates the "art" in martial arts.

Slaves who were shipped to Brazil in the late 1800's are credited with the creation of the capoeira.  In order to avoid detection, the slaves decided to disguise their art in the ritual of dance.  Slavery was later abolished in 1888, and the plantation farmers were not interested in hiring ex-slaves.  With unemployment running high, some of the former slaves turned to crime- using their knowledge of capoeira to defeat their victims.  Laws were quickly passed to banish the practice of the art.  Practitioners were, once again, forced to practice their martial art beneath the eyes of the public.  However, in 1937, a famous Mestre (capoeira instructor) was invited to perform at the capital of Brazil.  A successful demonstration led to the Mestre's gaining permission to open a legally recognized capoeira school.  The art has since been gaining recognition through the years.

Capoeira Brazilian Pelourinho is a school that was founded in 1995 by Mestre Lazaro de Bahia.  Located on Kingspointe Parkway in Orlando, the academy offers classes for adults, women only, and children.  Those interested more in the fitness and health benefits of capoeira are welcome to try their caporobics program.  Feel free to contact them at 407 226 3195 for more information.
