Dear Indianapolis Resident,
There is just enough time for one last attempt on my part to inspire you to greatness in 2011.
No, I am not going to put you to sleep with a recap of my “X Greatest Moments” or “X Greatest Articles”. To be perfectly honest there is not much use in reliving the past year unless it is to learn from our past victories and defeats in an attempt to make next year even better. We could discuss the highs and lows of the year for our city, but I have a feeling that most of us remember both the shining moments and “black eyes” that define Indianapolis in 2010.
Instead I want to share with you a quote I read recently, one that really struck a chord with me at personal level. First I will have to admit to being a “Star Wars Geek”, and no, there is no shame in enjoying the stories being written by these very talented writers. Many of the writers that have contributed to the Star Wars series are accomplished martial artists, some of them are even Instructors! When I read this quote I instantly thought of all the reasons why I teach a martial art and why I write about the martial arts.

In this simple, straight forward statement lies the key to success for us all in 2011. It is my sincere hope that everyone reading this article sets their goals with a focus on reaching greatness in 2011. Greatness can take many forms and can mean different things to different people. If we all strive to reach our own personal definition of greatness, honestly and whole-heartedly seek personal victory, we will make a major, and decidedly positive, impact on our city. None of us, however can do it alone, we all need help as we forge ahead and reach for our dreams.
No matter what your goals, regardless of how you define greatness, practicing a martial art can help you get where you want to be in life. The title of the article comes from the sign that announces the location of Pilsung ATA Martial Arts. The Instructors and students of Pilsung are united in the pursuit of personal victory, helping each other reach for their goals, even when those goals have no direct linkage to the martial arts. This is why the practice of martial arts and getting involved in a local school can have such a dramatic and positive impact on your life. What you find when you enter a good school is a support system and a group of people that want to help you succeed in whatever it is you choose to do. By joining a school as a student you are taking the first step towards greatness, you are surrendering control and allowing others to nurture your passions and talents. The world we live in is full of negative feedback and barriers to following your passions, developing your true talents.
