Martial Arts 101: When do I kick the heavy bags vs focus mitts?

It is best to train power kicks using the heavy bags as opposed to focus mitts.

When working your kick technique it is important to be sure that you are using the appropriate equipment, both to get the best work out as well as to avoid injury to yourself and your training partners.

When training for power kicks, it is always best to use heavy bags or large kicking shields as opposed to focus mitts.

The bags can be kicked with intensity and power and there is no need to be concerned with injuring a pad holder should you miss your target or overwhelm them with force they are unprepared for.

If desired, focus mitts can be used to train both partners in alternating kick combinations.

Focus mitts are excellent for honing targeting and speed skills.  The smaller target forces you to focus your aim and your partner can quickly change levels and positions enabling you to work quick combinations.

The mobility of focus mitts makes them ideal for speed and targeting.  Partners can also alternate combinations or work a quick flow by both holding and kicking at the same time.

Focus mitts can be used to train movement as well as the holder is as mobile as the combatant and can simulate a fight situation, forcing the combatant to focus on speed and accuracy while continuing to be mobile.

Muay Thai pads are great for punch/kick combinations since they are sturdier than typical focus mitts, and easier to manage than a single large kick shield which limits you to kicking techniques. However, they are heavy!
