Mama Doni is a wild woman of Jewish Music. Grew up right here in Lower Merion and for some reason we'll never understand moved to New Jersey! Doni performs internationally with The Mama Doni Band, bringing her signature brand of "funky music with a Jewish twist" to an ever-expanding fan base. Mama Doni and The Mama Doni Band were winners of the Simcha Prize (simcha is the Yiddish word for joy or gladness!) at this year's International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam, beating out more than 100 bands from 15 countries.
Doni has a new album of Chanukah songs, called I Love Chanukah The songs feature a wild mix of musical styles including "Latke Man,” a retro-swing pop song; "The Funky Gold Menorah," a kid-friendly hip-hop dance tune; "La Vida Dreidel," a Jewish twist on Latin style; and "You Say Hanukah, (I say Chhhanukah)," a quirky steel drum, island-style number. Chanukah will never be the same!
In her press release, MAMA DONI says that she "hopes that her music will bring some Jewish flavor into the lives of people everywhere. She feels passionate about preserving the precious Yiddish and Jewish spirit by conveying it with a contemporary vibe to which everyone can relate. If, thanks to her songs, people start using the word "shvitzin'" for the very first time on a hot summer day, MAMA DONI will know she has been a success!"
Don't you love it? Don't you have to buy it? Well, actually, no. During the month of December it's available for free download from her website: www.mamadoni.com. The EP can also be purchased on disk for $4 at CDBaby.com. Additionally, at The Mama Doni Band’s live concerts during December, ‘I Love Chanukah’ will be given, free of charge, to those purchasing ‘I Love Herring (& Other Fish Shticks for Kids).’ (If you can, buy it. goodness knows musicians need the lift!)
But you know you're going to want to buy it for next year. It's the perfect Hanukkah gift along with a bound of potatoes and a few onions! Let me know when the party happens, I'll be there!
One more way to move from "I do" to happily and healthily ever after.
