A new Austin pharmacy is celebrating Earth Day by launching a “take back” program that lets customers bring in unused or expired medication for eco-friendly disposal.
Live Oak Pharmacy says it’s the first retail pharmacy in Austin to provide year-round pharmaceutical collection services.
Live Oak Pharmacy will accept unused or expired prescription medication, over-the-counter medication, medication samples, vitamins and supplements. Controlled substances, however, will not be taken.
Flushing or throwing away unused medication makes it possible for potentially harmful chemical compounds to enter local water supplies.
“As members of the community, pharmacists are in a prime position to educate the public and ensure the safe and proper handling of medications, from dispensing to disposal,” said Nathan Pope, co-owner and pharmacist at Live Oak Pharmacy.
“We feel this is the right thing to do for our community and our environment, and welcome all in the community to come and talk with our team about their prescriptions and how to store, use and dispose of them properly.”
Live Oak Pharmacy is at 1611 W. Fifth St., just west of downtown Austin.
