AT&T Inc. has been working on fixing a problem Friday that has caused choppy mobile phone service for wireless customers in the Austin area.
Mike Barger, a spokesman for San Antonio-based AT&T, told Examiner.com: “Due to an equipment issue, some customers in the Austin area may be experiencing issues with their wireless service. AT&T technicians are currently working to resolve the issue, and we will provide more information as it becomes available. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
In a posting on Twitter, KEYE-TV reported: "For those with AT&T signal issues, we've been told there's a local 3G outage causing call problems. Disable 3G on your phones."
The service problem in the Austin area comes a day after AT&T vowed to improve its wireless network. The Associated Press reported that AT&T, stung by complaints about dropped calls and slow wireless downloads, would spend an additional $2 billion to beef up its network this year.
“Wireless is our No. 1 investment priority,” said John Stankey, president and CEO of AT&T’s Operations division, according to The Associated Press.
AT&T plans to spend $18 billion to $19 billion in 2010 on upgrading its networks to handle the onslaught of new data traffic from smartphones. That’s roughly $2 billion more than the company had invested in the previous year, according to CNET.
