Andrew Caldwell, known as “The History Chef,” is releasing a book called Their Last Suppers: Legends of History and their Final Meals. The book profiles historical figures who died unnaturally and what they ate for their last meals.
Included are biographical sketches of the celebrities with each chapter concluding with the recipes of the meals that they last ate. Caldwell is planning a trilogy of these books, the first of which is out now. And who’s in the first installment? Marilyn Monroe, of course.
And what was in Ms. Monroe's stomach when she died? According to Caldwell, Mexican takeout. (I was always under the impression that her stomach was empty, which was part of the controversy of her death. Where were the pills that should have killed her? But I don't dwell on this, either. I might be wrong.)
It’s an eclectic mix of people included in the book. The other celebrities are Captain John Smith, Martin Luther King, Napoleon Bonaparte, Alexander the Great, Princess Diana, John F. Kennedy, Montezuma II, Rasputin, Cleopatra, Admiral Horatio Nelson, Abraham Lincoln, Leonidas, Captain Lehmann, Elvis Presley, Lord Frederick Chelmsford, Julius Caesar, George Armstrong Custer, Adolf Hilter, and Captain James Cook.
