Scars of Mirrodin's common white 2/2 flyer, Kemba's Skyguard, takes the vanilla template of Wild Griffin and Wind Drake and offers a tasty side dish to go along with the main course.
Kemba's Skyguard
1WW
Creature - Cat Knight Common
Flying
When Kemba's Skyguard enters the battlefield, you gain 2 life.
2/2
The first thing you should notice about Kemba's Skyguard is that it does come with a relevant racing reward in the form of 2 bonus life, as well as the creature type Knight.
Before, that probably meant it was slightly more vulnerable to Knight of the Mists in an obscure Cube or Elder Dragon Highlander game, but now Kemba's Skyguard adds a new creature to go along with your Knight Exemplar.
The second thing you probably noticed is that Kemba's Skyguard's cost is slightly more restrictive than other 2/2 flying creatures, which is only fair since it's going to be giving back a few points of life. There's also the possibility that creature type Cat may be relevant in Scars of Mirrodin, as the leonin faction will be out in force.
Flying creatures of the 2/2 variety for 3 have always been Limited staples, and Kemba's Skyguard even gives you a little bit of life insurance to race the opponent's ground forces. For a common slot creature, Kemba's Skyguard looks to be a solid skybound selection in Scars of Mirrodin - but we still have a lot of cards to see before any real judgment can be made.
