Andre Coimbra wins Magic: the Gathering Worlds 2009 Rome

Four hundred and eight of the most talented Magic: the Gathering players from over fifty different countries competed in the 2009 World Championships in Rome. The tournament was four days long, and in the end Andre Coimbra from Portugal would beat David Reitbauer from Austria, to end up being named the World Champion.

Andre Coimbra played a Naya deck that had been tweaked specifically just to beat Jund matches. Coimbra would end up against David Reitbauer, in the last round, who was playing a Jund deck. To read about the match in detail, check out Bill Stark’s article “Finals: the Clean Sweep.”

The top eight players Magic: the Gathering 2009 Worlds included:

Andre Coimbra, from Portugal
David Reitbauer, from Austria
William Cavaglieri, from Italy
Terry Soh, from Malaysia
Manuel Bucher, from Switzerland
Marijn Lybaert, from Belgium
Bram Snepvangers, from Netherlands
Florian Pils, from Germany

In the Nation Team portion of Worlds, Austria beat the Czech Republic, and China beat the Netherlands, during the semi finals. In the finals, Zhiyang Zhang, Bo Li, and Wu Tong from China would end up defeating Austria to be the team champions.

Shouta Yasooka (yaya3 on Magic Online), the Pro Player of the Year, would end up being defeated by Anssi Myllymaki (Anathik on Magic Online), in the Magic Online Championships.

For those who haven’t heard, day two of the team portion of Worlds resulted in several disqualifications.

Yuuya Watanabe would later end up as the Player of the Year.

Lino Burgold would go on to claim the Rookie of the Year title.

Antoine Ruel, Kamiel Cornelissen, and Frank Karsten were all included into the Magic Pro Tour Hall of Fame.

With Worlds over, the professional Magic: the Gathering season will not start up again until Pro Tour San Diego in February of 2010.
